Web 2.0 for Learning – CIASTD presentation

I presented a webinar over lunch today for CIASTD on Web 2.0. You can find the slides online.

There is so much to know about Web 2.0, and the information is always changing. Here are some of my favorite resources:

Go2Web2 is a list of thousands of web 2.0 companies, with links and brief descriptions of what they do. Browsing around and skimming through some of the tools available is a good way to get a sense of all the creative things that are being done with Web 2.0 tools.

Jane Hart does a wonderful job of listing and categorizing tools for Web 2.0. Many of them are free (though, as I discussed in the webinar, sometimes free isn’t actually cost effective for organizations, since ramp-up and implementation time can be so much greater without the support of a commercial vendor).

Hope you enjoy digging in and learning more.  I made the point during my presentation that most people like sharing what they know – and that tendency is at the root of the infiltration of web 2.0 technologies into our daily lives and into our work worlds. Prove me right by sharing YOUR favorite resources in the comments.

Main benefits of Visual Effects schools

What are the Visual effects? According to a definition of these are "Reform to a film images during post-production." The visuals are basically a subcategory of special effects in handling images for enhanced effect for video or film. Includes amalgam of action recording live and CGI to produce an environment that looks real. This effect can be very dangerous or simply too difficult or expensive capture based on real time. It has increased the demand for the effects of the most variety, especially with films made with large budgets. Since a lot of money is at stake, filmmakers are looking for professionals who have experience in this field and can generate mind-blowing Visual effects, which are common but little interesting and keep the audience glued to the screen.

This theory, in turn justifies a great demand for schools that can train and offer courses to individuals. Visual effects schools offer a variety of media such as animation, audio recording, broadcasting, digital film and video etc. production training programmes. One of the best schools worldwide, in this area is Austin Visual Effects schools. Austin is the capital of the State of Texas and the fourth largest city.It is home to some of the best schools of design and fashion photography as well as schools of art, offering comprehensive courses with the help of software moderno.Los courses are more than just a simple practical training with the software.

Photography schools include:

or Art Institute: offers a program in commercial photography, digital photography, photography, photography, design and Visual Arts. Provides Bachelor studies and diploma in this field.

or Westwood College: offers a Bachelor's degree in visual communication.

or the University of Texas at Austin: Department of radio and television film (or RTF) gives some fantastic summer for young people from 7 to 12 media camps grados.estos fields are held on the campus of the University and campers can use the equipment provided by the RTF.Los students get a chance to examine various aspects of film.Usually a camp lasts 5 days and the session fee is $ 475.

Visual effects can be divided into four broad categories:

1. The models, what miniature sets are used for

2 Digital or traditional paintings: these are necessary to meet the background elements

3 Live action: here are the characters principales.Las performances are coded on a green screen or blue screen.

4. Digital animation: this involves the graphics by computer, texturing, animation, generating 3D etc. characters.

These schools also offer graphic design courses that include the study design, lively typeface, logo creation, manipulation of Photoshop images and websites etc., along with practical training software used in the industry.

Once you graduate from these schools, get a job at the entrance of the posts of graphic movement and Visual effects supervisor etc. advertising, computer, video editing, artists designers.

Designing Training that Helps the Brain Learn and the Learner Perform

It’s been awhile since I tackled one of The Learning Circuits Blog Big Question of the Month – but this one is intriguing ” “Does the discussion of how the brain learns impact your e-learning design?”

I feel pretty confident answering yes, – and only partly because I have a boss who’s a huge fan of research-based instructional design. We literally spent half of our last company-wide meeting reviewing the basics from learning researchers like Ruth Clark, Robert Gagne, and Benjamin Bloom.

One of the criticisms I saw from some of the bloggers who called the brain-based instruction craze a lot of hooey was that the principles were just “common sense”. The problem with common sense is that some of what I see as common practice doesn’t necessarily make sense with what we know about how people learn. Here are the top three “common sense” practices I see that run completely counter to what we know about how people learn.

Interesting facts will help the learner better remember the information

Ruth Clark’s coherence principle is pretty clear that extraneous information detracts from learning. This extraneous information won’t drive performance, even if the learner does remember it. And the space it takes up in the learner’s brain might well be better used for performance-driving information.

Often, subject matter experts want to compound the damage by putting the interesting but irrelevant information right at the start of the training. The basic instructional design principle of primacy tells us that right up front is prime learning real estate – definitely not the place to put something you don’t really care if the learner remembers or not.

Pictures engage the learner

The multimedia principle (Ruth Clark again – we like her stuff quite a lot around BLP) says that pictures have to be relevant to be useful in learning. Sounds obvious enough – but how many powerpoint slides or e-learning pages have you seen with graphics that are clearly there to just make the page look better? Pretty is good – pretty and relevant is required for the instruction to be effective.

Practice is a nice-to-have, but can be skipped if you run out of time

While I very seldom hear clients talk about this one when designing instructor led training, we’ve all seen it happen. Instructors run out of time, or simply want to win points with their audience by getting done early, and the first thing to go is the exercises. We’ve all heard that practice makes perfect – and most of us have heard the nitpicky version, “perfect practice makes perfect”. Common sense, sure, but also often ignored in practice.

The Risks and Benefits of Coming To Consensus

I recently received an e-mail asking what I thought about adding 16 new people to the alpha review list for a e-learning course. The idea was to get a wide variety of opinions from people from around the organization and around the globe. To be inclusive and ensure that the course would be well received by the global audience for which it is intended. This is a group that likes to work by consensus, and they wanted to bring that culture to this project.

Now personally, I’m a big fan of consensus. I love talking a problem through with other people until a solution presents itself out of the chaos. In this case, though, the intentions behind the push for consensus and the realities of this approach, turned out to be very disconnected.

Get the team to feel a sense of ownership and pride in the course, so they will be more likely to promote it.

A lot of the edits that were submitted were ultimately ignored, because they didn’t line up with other comments. There was (as one would expect) a lot of discontinuity between the sets of edits. For example – one person loved the color scheme, another person hated it. Whatever we do with that information, somebody is going to think (correctly) that we disregarded their input. Where that happened on content points, the project runs the risk of having enemies, rather than advocates.

Make the decision-making easier.

Consolidating edits from all those people adds a whole lot of work and effort, and that’s before you even get to the decision making. And, at the end of the day, someone still has to write and approve the actual words that will be used. On balance, the approval process took longer and more effort even for the final decision-maker.

Despite the risks and the frustration factor, I still believe it makes sense to work consensus into the creation of e-learning solutions. To do so effectively:

Get consensus as early in the project as possible. Get consensus on the goals and objectives of the project. If people have different goals in mind, it’ll be impossible for them to agree on tactics. Since it’s World Cup season, I’ll use a sports analogy – if you don’t agree on which goal you’re shooting at, you aren’t going to agree on which direction to run.Recognize when you or your team is trying to use coming to consensus on how to describe a process as a way to come to consensus on the process itself. When the process, product or policy you are training people on is new, it is likely to take a lot longer to come to consensus. Plan that time into your project, because you will end up using ig.Decide where consensus is worth the cost. Consensus takes a lot of time to achieve. It’s worth taking the time for the big stuff. But when it comes down to deciding every single word in a course, as long as the words convey the appropriate message it’s probably not worth the time to come up with the perfect phrasing. As much as it pains me to recognize this, the words we craft with such care are often skimmed with much less attention to detail by our learners.What experiences have you had trying to come to consensus on a course? What tips do you live by when planning your projects?

How to improve the quality of your video with keying effects of chroma

Embedding of hue refers to a process of shooting a subject against a background of green or blue. Linwood Dunn was the first to experiment with this concept. Worked with RKO pictures when used mattes to create sweeps in "Flying Down to Rio" in 1933. This film, Dunn has designed a variety of special effects to your home printer.

With the advancement of television, these visuals developed.Digital photography has been modified using these visual effects in greater medida.estos effects are now used in video and images to improve quality.

Steps to use the embedding of chroma:

Set the background to this process of photography. You can use the green or blue color as the background of the case. These two tones are the principal are farther away from the skin tone human.If you use any other color, such as coffee, gets entangled with the skin of the sujeto.La light gets reflected on using light as a white or yellow colors. Blue or green colors are separated from the human skin tone. These tones are masking the background color is smooth and easy.

The key screen of chroma should be uniformly illuminated to avoid any kind of shadows and make soft masking. Make sure that the topic should not be any color that is being used as the background screen. Otherwise, it will be obstructed the masking process.Light the subject properly shot.You can use the key light that illuminates the subject and background.Fill light is used to remove shadows falling on the face or the subject's clothing.Rear light is used for lighting to the bottom of the asunto.Una person also can use amber gels or color to create the visual effect on the tema.puede filters make the subject appear attractive through the use of these gels ámbar.después shoot the subject, a person can digitally replace the substance of the matter by any other photo deseable.puede put the object in a zone of sea beach or fields green with this picture.

This form of photography can use for portrait photography, cinema, modeling and other such purposes.

Using Audio in e-Learning (or not…)

If you’ve read any of my other blog posts (or, say, met me in person) you might get the idea that I like cool technology. You’d be right. You’d think that, given any chance, I’d want to use audio and video and animation in my e-learning courses. (and you’d often be right). But I recently had a situation where I was the one making the case to avoid using moving pictures and audio.

Like any other tool at our disposal, audio is appropriate in some cases and in appropriate in others. There are some very good reasons to use audio, and some very good reasons to avoid audio. You’ll notice all the good reasons to use audio are content-driven, and the good reasons to avoid audio are a more mixed bag.

Your content is best explained using pictures, particularly if they’re moving pictures. Our brains do better listening than reading when the pictures are moving.You want to provide examples of how something sounds. Usually, this means conversation. Occasionally it might be sounds learners need to understand.You believe people would rather listen than read. Please, and I’m begging here people, do not read things to your learners just because you think they’re more likely to listen than to read. Think back, if you will, to the last time someone read a powerpoint to you? Felt like they were wasting your time, didn’t it? That’s because most people read about twice as fast as most people talk.You think audio is more engaging than written text. Words are or aren’t engaging based on how well they’re crafted, and how directly they’re relevant to what you want to know. People will read books just for fun if they’re written well – and they’ll also wade through terribly written technology manuals to figure out something they need to know.More people are auditory learners than visual learners. While a lot has been written about learning styles, pretty much nobody’s able to show it makes a difference in effectiveness.The course needs to go all over the world. Translation of text is much easier than translation of audio.The course is likely to need frequent updating. Audio – particularly audio timed to moving picture (such as a flash animation).is more difficult and time-consuming to update than text.

How do you use audio in your courses? When do you avoid it? And what misnomers about using audio  do you find yourself having to explain over and over to others?

LOL? Seriously? I wonder what ELSE they think is funny…

When I saw my friend Lee last night, he told me “I looked at your blog the other day.” He’d seen it referenced in the signature line of an e-mail I sent him. He went on to say, ” I read three or four entries. Then I went back up and looked more closely at the title.” He told me that, for a minute there, he had real concerns about our sense of humor. Because he wasn’t seeing ANYTHING on this LOL blog that struck him as particularly funny.

The conversation (which did make me Laugh Out Loud a little) also made me think about acronyms in general and how often they’re a source for misunderstanding. Do you check your learning materials to make sure the language used is commonly understood by your target audience? As a consultant, I have an advantage working with most clients when it comes to jargon and potentially confusing language. Terms that are likely to confuse listeners are likely to confuse me, too, prompting the question. Even that’s not foolproof, though, since it’s human nature to pick up on language and jargon pretty quickly.

And it’s not as though we don’t have jargon, too. “The rule of difference” or “congruence” are terms that make perfect sense to me and my coworkers – because we talk about those principles a lot. When it comes to explaining to subject matter experts why we are making certain design choices in our courses, I have to explain what I mean by those and other learning terms.

So, as with so much in learning (and in life), context is key. And clarity is more difficult to achieve than we sometimes think it will be.

Filmmaking: The Director

The director is responsible for translating a script into visuals that will be turned over to an editor to pull together into a film. However, as the director joins the project in the writing or pre-production phase and does not leave the project until post-production. The director may well be involved in all aspects of the editing phase, such as sound design, music composition, recording, and mixing into the overall sound, until the film is completed. In other words, the director is responsible for the creative supervision of the film from early in its conception to its completion. The director will work most closely with the producer, who is responsible for the organizational and financial supervision of the film from its conception to its conclusion.

The director may either play a secondary role to the scriptwriter or partner with the writer in the pre-production phase. The exact nature of the role depends on the director’s track record, influence, and interest. There is no such variability in the production phase, when the director is clearly responsible. Interpretation of the screenplay, blocking, breakdown of the script into specific shots, and modulation of the performances of actors are some of the specific responsibilities of the director in the production phase. In the post production phase, the director’s interest or influence will either expand or reduce the director’s involvement. Generally, directors are quite involved in this phase even though editors (picture and sound) are driving many decisions.

However, is that writers, directors, and editors share one goal to tell the story as effectively as possible but their contributions differ. Writers use words. Directors use camera shots and performances, and editors use visuals and sound to tell the story for the audience.

Similarities – and Differences – Between Training and Communication

“I need training.”

Don’t get me wrong, I dearly love to hear those words when I pick up the phone, because it means that I might get the chance to help someone and work on a new exciting project.  The problem, of course, is that a pretty significant percentage of the time that declaration is just not quite…true.

Training, as far as I’m concerned, means that the person going through it can do something at the end that they couldn’t do at the start. Most of what businesses call training actually isn’t training by that definition. It’s communication.

Training and communication share a lot of elements, but they have some distinct differences, as well.

Clear, concise language that gets right to the heart of the matter.Clear, concise language that gets right to the heart of the matter.Say the same thing more than once, applying the “Repeat to Remember” brain rule.Maybe say the same thing more than once, applying the “Repeat to Remember” brain rule.Use worked examples to help the audience see the principles you’re talking about in action.Maybe used worked examples to help the audience see the principles you’re talking about in action.Identify and focus on how the information will actually be put into practice on the job.No need to identify or emphasize how the information will actually be put into practice.Give the audience opportunities to practice the key skills you are trying to teach.

Communication is very effective for most business goals. Really, the biggest difference is that in a straight communication piece, you aren’t trying to help the recipient APPLY the information. That’s appropriate an a lot of situations, either because the recipients will already know how to apply the information you provide, or because it’s not really information you need them to apply. Both happen in business all the time.

That’s not to say it’s a good practice. I would submit that if you can’t identify HOW someone needs to use the information you want to provide them, perhaps you shouldn’t be providing it. At the very least, you shouldn’t be pushing it. Instead, focus on making it available to those who want it. More importantly, focus on making it valuable to those you believe need it – so they will seek it out on their own.

That’s where an instructional design focus can be helpful even for communication projects. Instructional design is all about giving people information in a way that lets them apply it to the work they do every day. Even if you aren’t going to truly train people on a topic, you still typically want the information to be constructed in a way that makes it useful.

Do you distinguish between training and communication projects? How are they different when you create them?

Green Screen Magic

Green screen is a technique used to bring imagination or illusions to reality through the placement of an actor or subject in the foreground of a solid color background screen film. One of the main colors of the use is green because it is easy to work and less likely to conflict with the colors of foreground. That is why the term green screen is used to identify this form of media. We witness the magic of the green screen or chroma key technology every day, when we look at the weather report on the nightly news.

Steps used in the creation of green screen effects are:

(1) Filming the actor or subject in the foreground of a key screen for chroma.
(2) Once the film is complete moved to the room where you post production by removing the green background and replacing empty space with deseado.Un background images editing example is in the movie Spider-man where he is jumping between tall buildings.
(3) During the filming of the first series of films of its necessary to use proper or adequate lighting to prevent shadows and thus define the outline of the picture.
(4) Camera angles right and the distance is necessary realism or false to prevent the results of the last movie coming out of aspect.

Other uses of technology green screen beyond the movie making are:

(1) Shows TV production as news and basis for action TV programmes.
(2) Web advertising
(3) Instruction videos as teaching people how to fly an airplane or helping to overcome their fears.
(4) Filming scenes of incredible action without causing injury or put anyone at risk.
(5) Improve still photography to create an amazing image.
(6) Making music videos.
(7) Key of chroma allows images are added or removed from the film during the editing process.

Green screen technology bridges the gap between reality and illusion provide an opportunity to use their creative skills to impossible movie scenes to the producers of the film.Chroma key combined with set of reality technology advantages:

1) Effective cost by eliminating the high costs associated with the location of the filming as: travel, transportation equipment, team bonus film, cameras and lighting equipment and other types of production equipment needed for the shooting.
(2) Eliminating the studies need to buy expensive footage stock which sometimes does not provide what is needed for a whole really creíble.El study you can buy cheap 30 second, allowing it to develop a reality set library to use again on other projects movie clip.
(3) Using sets of reality are more convenient to the actual location of filming that are constrained by high costs, distance, time, weather conditions, remote location, and other restrictions of production.
(4) Access to restrictive locations are overcome through the use of the key technology of chroma and reality is set as the filming at the airport, the House white or elsewhere where access is restricted or limited.
(5) Diversity with a library of sets of reality producers have various capabilities to easily create change, add or delete locations.
(6) The credibility is given to the producer when showing new customers than it is possible to create using green screen technology and sets the realidad.Además, this technology saves time by shooting the Elimination of the need to change camera angles during the filming. camera angles are easily added during post production film.

Green screen technology is limited only to the movie studios with large budgets? answer to this question is not, this type of technology can be in casa.Todo what are needed are purchases of: kit green screen, a video collection of reality, software editing film and a good imagination. most of this equipment can be purchase by Internet.La next time you see a movie with incredible action or special effects that can tell you I know how that was hecho.Si you have a video clip or picture that you want to increase or want to earn some extra cash at home think about investing in green screen technology.

There are so many other sites that offer various forms of advice on how to use the green screen, but most of them is not very detailed or precisa.Antes follow these, be sure to check my own articles and reviews on the green screen and green screen Los Angeles. also I can reach 1-323-851-3825 or phillipguy@hotmail.com

Training Trends 2010: What’s happening and so what?

I just finished giving a talk on training trends – what they are and the “so what’s” associated with them.

Here’s a link to the slides associated with this presentation

We had a nice group of folks participating, and we generated lots of discussion. Here – for those of you who don’t want to access the slides – are the top 6 trends we see, and the “so-what’s associated with these trends. Feel free to agree, disagree, or propose other trends.

The need/demand to compress time.The shift from “training” to “learning.”The shift from F2F to online classroom.Rapid authoring (and we aren’t talking about Articulate here!)The new blend – formal and informal.Mobile and web delivery.

The trends are pretty self-explanatory. I think it’s the “so what’s” associated with them that are more interesting. What implications do the trends have for learning professionals, learners, and, indeed, companies who employ people and, in theory, support learning.

Traditional learning design models need to be revamped and re-thought. We have to consider usability data from learners as part of this.Remembering is WAY less important than it used to be. Now…FINDING stuff is most important. (Think WebMD)Instructional design – and the role of instructional designers – has to change. (Yeah, this one kind of links with Point 1).The tech toolbox HAS to be big – you can’t just use one tool and expect it do be your one-size fits all learning solution. Instructional designers may not have the technical proficiency to use all the tools, but they better be able to identify appropriate tools and figure out what to use when (or know who to ask.We have many more distractions for learners and IDers to manage – NO ONE gives 100% attention to most learning events – formal or informal!The new blend – formal and informal – only works so well. The holy grail right now is to “formalize informal learning” which sounds great but may not be a really good idea. Informal learning that is “formalized” requires a gardener/moderator to tend to it and cultivate interactions/community. Informal learning that is mandated (e.g. You will submit X blog posts/week gets the required minimum….but doesn’t really foster better learning. For me, it’s more about recognizing when letting people learn on their own is okay – and creating tools that make it easier for this to happen.

I’m going to deliver this presentation again on July 14th in Bloomington, IN and again via webinar in late July. Check out our website if you’d like to sign up for the next webinar:

How should you offer presents your photos?

Photography is a form of art that is used to express human feelings, thoughts and different situations. With advanced techniques and technology, you can create mesmerizing images. Skills and advanced cameras, and techniques, you can create images of landscapes, portraits and realization of glamour image.

A person can create Visual effects with the help of video editing. There are a variety of commercially available video editing software that you choose. For picture prefect by, a person must know the audience. Hearings can be your friends, relatives or colleagues. You can even use the picture in order to publications and galleries. You must have Visual effects to make attractive and visually attractive pictures. Use a good quality with advanced technology camera for photographing the topic well. One can create an image and apply visual effects to images. If you are creating videos, you can apply fade in and fade out effects. One person can edit the colors of still images. For example, can change or modify the brightness, and adjust the contrast of images. For publications, a person can create images in low resolution that can be stored in compact discs, disks, Digital Video, and other such devices. Sometimes with the purpose of publication, a person may prepare an image for storing or submission in the slides. Therefore, a photographer keep the image resolution in mind while storing images on slides or other such devices storage. It is the responsibility of a photographer to determine how the images should be considered. It can be seen in the albums to friends and family. For this reason, decide the size of the images appear impressive. You can use special papers, fonts or frames for pictures albums. One can even use special quotes by the side of the picture.If you want it to walls, the framework must be sufficiently large to lucidity. ensure that there are any pixels of the viewable image and every feature in the picture is developed in the emphatic form.

How much support do learners want/need?

Lately I’ve been working on lots of cool projects where I get to help create interactive, learner-driven e-learning. Love it!  Which means that I get the opportunity to talk a lot about how much help learners should have, along with how soon they get feedback after making a mistake.  My challenge is that my first reaction is to provide very little help. My philosophy often is,  “In real life I don’t have someone looking over my shoulder telling me whether I’m making the right decisions.” Clients are often a little nervous about that approach and say, “We don’t want learners to become frustrated or feel like it is too hard.” Which position is right?

Well, it depends. Don’t you love that answer?  I think it depends on two things 1) the topic and 2) the learner.

How the TOPIC impacts the level of learner support:

Real-life consequences of making a mistake. The higher the potential consequences of mistakes, the more important it becomes to test learner ability in the training environment. I recently did an online module that was broken into two modules, Learn It and Do It. The Learn It module had more support, but the Do It had much less. We needed to be sure that the learners had mastered the skill.Ambiguity of right answers. I recently did a course that was product training and included conversation practices with customers. There are a lot of ways to sell a product and a lot of ways to approach customers. Because there wasn’t one “right” answer, we let learners go all the way down a path before giving them feedback with things for them to consider next time. No real conversation they have with a customer will be exactly like the one in the e-learning course, so we didn’t need to worry about them getting it “right”.

How the LEARNER impacts the level of learner support:

A less experienced learner (one with little prior knowledge about the task or topic) needs more support. Because they have less of a framework, they can’t evaluate their own progress as well as a more experience learner can.A tech-savvy learner will be more comfortable exploring the learning and making lots of mistakes to learn because they are comfortable in the learning environment. If your audience is not familiar with the learning environment (the computer, user interface, etc.), they have additional hurdles to overcome in addition to learning the task. Those audiences may need more support earlier to avoid frustration with the technology – which can transfer into frustration with the learning.

What SHOULDN’T  impact the level of learner support. There are a couple of arguments for lots of learner support that I really don’t buy:

We don’t want learners to think that the task is difficult. If it is really difficult, we aren’t helping anyone by making it easier in the e-learning than it really is.We don’t want the learners to feel bad if they make a mistake. Welcome to life. If they can’t handle that reality, there are other issues to work through!

What do you think? What other criteria helps you make decisions about the level of support to offer?

Film Production Equipment

With the advent of new technologies, film production equipment and the materialization of digital video as an acceptable medium for film has given anyone the privilege to become a film director virtually overnight. Even if the cost of film making is high and some of this video production equipment are easy on the budget and can be learned easily without delay. Even though the focus is more on the art of film making rather than the equipment, easy access to video equipment has kept many starters driven to try film making and give it their best shot. These recent advances in film production have made way for independent films to prosper. The first step in making yourself a Steven Spielberg is to understand completely the basics of video production equipment.

It is fundamental for you to take stock of your film production equipment as you start setting up video for the shoot to ensure that you have everything you need. In creating a professional-looking film, the most fundamental video production equipment you need to have are professional video cameras, stabilization equipment and also film lighting equipment as well as a microphone or audio system. Some camera support equipment may also be needed like dollies, tracks, jibs, lifts, tripods, cranes and booms. Furthermore, you might want to factor in the trucks and other vehicles that will transport the cameras and other equipment needed for the filming. There are also times when specialized equipment may be required for enhancing audio and video effects. In other instances, climate control machinery is also needed to come up with the appropriate effects for the film.

When you are done with the creation of film on video, there is still some more video production equipment needed to edit and finalize the video and come up with your masterpiece. With the use of pro quality editing equipment, you can create your video one that has a professional polished look that sets it apart from any home video or any amateur film production. These video-editing tools may include video editing software, sound mixing equipment, and video duplication equipment.

Today there are many providers of film production equipment like camera, video, lighting and film processing. You should research on film equipment vendors, which can offer movie production supplies that will suit your needs. Find those that can offer quality service, technical skill excellence and also fair pricing. You won’t have to buy this video production equipment now since there are many that can be rented. However, if you want your own gear, it is many used items that you can purchase as well.

Technical terms in motion capture

(Pre - Production, Production, Post Production, Motion Capture, New Media)

_______________________________________________________________________

A) Pre - Production

Scene: A scene or script is a numbered part of a film script, which may be broken down into parts in longshot, medium-shot, close-up, etc by the director when shooting. A master scene is a fairly long length of the script, all under one number, which the director will certainly break down later. He or she may, however, take the whole of a master scene first, then shoot closeups of the various characters to cut in with this later. In animation the basic unit of continuous action, usually shot on one background, from which a film is built up.

Script: The detailed scene-by-scene instructions for a film or television production, including description of setting and action with dialogue and camera directions. When the script also has full details of visuals it is termed a 'storyboard'.

Storyboard: A form of shooting script common for animated films for many years and now usually used for commercials, even live-action ones. It consists of a series of sketches showing key positions for every scene, with dialogue and descriptive notes below. Still used in animation.

================================================================

B) Production

2D Animation: The creation of moving pictures in a two-dimensional environment, such as through "traditional" cel animation or in computerized animation software. This is done by sequencing consecutive images, or "frames", that simulate motion by each image showing the next in a gradual progression of steps. The eye can be "fooled" into perceiving motion when these consecutive images are shown at a rate of 24 frames per second or faster. 3D

Animation:

The creation of moving pictures in a three-dimensional digital environment. This is done by sequencing consecutive images, or "frames", that simulate motion by each image showing the next in a gradual progression of steps, filmed by a virtual "camera" and then output to video by a rendering engine. The eye can be "fooled" into perceiving motion when these consecutive images are shown at a rate of 24 frames per second or faster.

Character animation: The art of making an animated figure move like a unique individual; sometimes described as acting through drawings. The animator must "understand how the character's personality and body structure will be reflected in its movements.

Character model: A sheet of drawings defining the proportions, shape, clothing etc. of a character for the guidance of animators.

Computer animation: The technique of using computers to generate moving pictures. Some systems can achieve this in real-time (25 frames per second-or in the USA 30fps), but the majority of animation is created one frame at a time and then edited into a continuous sequence. Very sophisticated programs are required to perform the tasks of movement, fairing, perspective, hidden-surface removal, colouring, shading and illumination, and as the trend increases towards more realistic images, faster computers are needed to process the millions of computations required for each frame. The term "computer animation" covers a broad range of subjects, but overall can be defined as the creation of moving images through the use of computers. These images can be created in either a two-dimensional or three-dimensional space, and can be applied to web design, user interface design, application development, video games, movies, special effects, cartooning, and many others.

Computer graphics: Charts, diagrams, drawings and other pictorial representations that are computer generated.

Effects animation: The animation of non-character movements such as rain, smoke, lightning, water, etc.

Go-Motion: Similar to 'Stop-Motion', but the animation is produced by rods attached to the pupet/creature, which can be programmed by a computer to perform the required movement. The advantage over stop-motion is that a lot more realistic movement can be created, because the puppet/creature blurs slightly between each frame. The disadvantage is that the rods attached to the creature need to be hidden from view (e.g. using the blue-screen process)

In Between: The paper drawing of a figure that lies in sequence between two key positions drawn by an animator.

Key frame animation: The animator 'draws' directly onto the CRT display and produces a basic picture or cell. A number of these drawings can then be superimposed on one another to form a composite cell or key frame. Many of these key frames can be made up and stored in the computer to be called up and used as required. The action of the film can be created by stringing together the series of key frames, and introducing the desired movements between one frame and the next. Each key frame can be used over and over again by simply calling it repeatedly from the computer score.

Stop-Motion Animation: Moving a special effects puppet or model/creature a small amount and recording a single frame (or small number of frames) so that when the film is played back at a normal speed it appears to move. The disadvantage with this form of animation is that it can sometimes appear to 'strobe', partly due to the lack of blur between the frames.

Three-dimensional modeling: Geometrical descriptions of an object using polygons or solids in three dimensions (x,y,z coordinates) for the purpose of creating the illusion of height, width and depth.

C) Post Production

Edit : The process of assembling video clips, audio tracks, graphics and other source marerial into a presentable package.

Off-Line Edit : A "draft" edit, usually prepared in an off-line edit suite (at a lower cost), then taken to an on-line facility to make the final cut.

On-Line Edit : The final version of an edit, prepared in a professional edit facility.

Non-linear editing : An approach to video editing made possible by digital video recordings. As in word processing, video segments can be inserted between two existing segments without erasing either. Unlike the approach required when editing analog video , segments do not need to "laid down" in the sequence in which they will later be shown.

Off-line editing : The steps during the edit process when a preliminary selection of usable shots and scenes is made, and the tentative sequence of these elements is decided. This process is typically done with lower cost, simpler editing equipment than is found in a professional edit suite (where on-line editing is done). Using off-line editing can significantly reduce the total cost of a producation.

On-line editing : The steps during the edit process when the compilation of final program is done. When affordable, this is done in a professional edit suite with high quality equipment. If off-line editing had been done, the edit decision list from that phase guides the on-line edit process, typically minimizing the time and cost in the professional edit suite.

Post Production : The phases of production that occur after the recording, filming, or taping. This includes editing, mixing, effects, dubbing, compression, mastering, etc.

Render Farm : A group of computers which work together to perform the computation-intensive tasks of 3-D rendering.

================================================================

D) Motion Capture

Mocap : The process of recording the data from human movement so that it can be used for 3D characters created on a computer. Mocap can be used for 3D animations for film, TV and games, and for special effects work. There are wireless, magnetic motion capture systems, and optical systems, which track markers attached to the animator.

Performance Capture : The recording of a performance, either human or animal, using a Motion Capture system (or similar technology) - difference being that you can motion capture a table, but it is cannot give a performance. Special Effects Blue (or Green)

Screen : A system that replaces a specified colour (blue in this case) with images from another source. This can either be done optically (eg. using film) or electronically (eg. in video, also known as Chroma-Key in video). Some computer systems look at pixel in the scene and determine whether to replace that pixel with the other video source. Better computer systems allow 'some' of the colour of the pixel from 1 image and 'some' from another image. The better systems could be take transparent objects (eg. bottles) or smoke and combine these with the images from another source.

Chroma-Key : Keying out parts of an image which contain a particular colour (or colours). Eg. replacing a blue or green background with images from another source.

Composite : To combine two or more individual images onto one piece of film by photographic or digital means. Early compositing was accomplished in the camera by masking part of the scene when filming, rewinding the film and removing the matte and shooting again to expose the previously masked portion. Digital compositing is commonplace, in which multiple film images are scanned into the computer, combined digitally, and output to a single piece of film.

Motion Control : Controling the motion of a camera or special effects object (eg. model space ship etc), using commands from a computer, so that the exact moves can be repeated as many times. This makes it easy to composite it (ie.combine it with another shot).

Rotoscoping : Drawing around something in the frame so that an effect can be applied to that part of the film. If an animated creature has to go behind something in the live action piece of film, that object can be drawn around so a matte can be created, so that the createure will not show over the top of that object. If the camera is moving, then each frame of film would have to be rotoscoped. If the camera is still, then the same matte can probably be used for all frames in that shot. Rotoscoping was first used by the Fleischers for making cartoons. The Fleischers invented the Rotoscope, which is a device for projecting live-action film on to paper frame by frame, so that the outline could be traced and used as a guide for the animation. The Rotoscope consists of an animation camera and a light source (usually using a prism behind the movement and the lamp house attached to the camera's open door) that projects a print through the camera's lense and the projected image is then traced to create a matte. The lamp house is then removed and the raw stock placed in the camera and the drawings are filmed through the same lense that projected the image. The resulting image will then fit the original image if the two strips of film are run bi-packed in the same projector movment (using an optical printer). In digital film effects work, rotoscoping refers to any drawn matte, as both images can be seen compisited while the matte is being drawn, so good results can be achieved.

Virtual Sets : Sets which are generated (at least partially) from data within a computer. Mostly used for TV work, these systems replace the real set (eg. an empty studio) with a computer generated set, allowing the actor/presenter to move in the foreground. eg. the background is 'keyed out' and replaced with the set which has been created in a 3D package (eg. Softimage or 3D Studio Max), and any camera movements will be duplicated by the 'virtual camera'. This will require a powerful computer, especially if it is to be done in real-time, for example a Silicon Graphics machine. The method of keeping track of the camera movement (so that it can be duplicated in the 3D computer set) is different for the various sytems. Some systems use a blue grid painted on the back wall of a studio of a known size. A red LED is projected onto the cameras and the actor/presenter so that they too can be tracked throughout the set.

Visual effects (also called optical or photographic effects) : Special effects achieved with the aid of photographic or digital technology, occurring after the principal photography, or main shooting, of a film. Includes miniatures, optical and digital effects, matte paintings, stop-motion animation, and computer-generated imagery (CGI).

Wire Removal : Removal of unwanted wires, rods, etc. from a piece of film by replacing them with what would have been seen if they weren't there (eg. the background). This can be done by replacing them with the same area from another frame in which the wires/rods were not visible, or by averaging the colours on either side of the wire and replacing it with the average.

================================================================

E) New Media

A generic term for the many different forms of electronic communication that are made possible through the use of computer technology. The term is in relation to "old" media forms, such as print newspapers and magazines, that are static representations of text and graphics. New media includes:

* Web sites

* streaming audio and video

* chat rooms

* e-mail

* online communities

* Web advertising

* DVD and CD-ROM media

* virtual reality environments

* integration of digital data with the telephone, such as Internet telephony

* digital cameras

* mobile computing

Use of the term new media implies that the data communication is happening between desktop and laptop computers and handhelds , such as PDAs , and the media they take data from, such as compact discs.

Rules of Composition in The Film Production

Position the Main Subject. Always consider putting the primary subject in the center of the frame. If there is a definite left, right, front or back to the subject it might be shifted to the right or left, but if, for example, it is a round flower vase (no right or left) possibly it had better be in the center of the frame if it is to be the only thing in the shot. As soon as you put it to one position you draw attention away from the vase and into the empty space on the other side of the frame. If nothing will ever be introduced in this space, and then your audience is left wondering what was supposed to be there when the shot ends. Admittedly, there could be many reasons for ignoring this advice, but be sure you have a definite reason.

Set the Headroom. The term headroom refers to the distance between the top of your subject (like a person’s head) and the top of the frame. When it is a human head, it’s disturbing if the top of the head is “cut off” by the top of the frame. As you tighten the shot from a medium shot to a close up to an extreme close, up you will eventually have to sacrifice the top of the head, but in a very close shot that’s acceptable. It’s better composition to keep the chin and loose the top of the head. A good way to think about this is to always have the person’s eyes on the (imaginary) line that defines the top third of the frame.

In your imagination as you view your shot in the viewfinder, divide it into thirds both vertically and horizontally. The most interesting or powerful areas in the frame are where the vertical and horizontal lines intersect. So, for example, if you’re taking a shot of a small wooden church on a distant hill out in the country, you might want to place the church on one of the two intersection points in the top third of the frame. It’ll be a more interesting shot than just centering the church, especially if you see the church in profile (that gives it a sense of back and front).

Set the Lead Room. Lead room refers to the space you should put in front of a subject that is looking or moving left to right – or right to left. This can be a person standing still in profile speaking to someone who is off camera, or a car that’s moving as you pan or track with it. It’s common to put more lead room in front of the subject, but not so much that the subject’s back is against the frame behind it. The space in front is more important to the viewer than the space behind.

Check the Periphery. The periphery is the part of the shot that is right against the boundaries of the frame. After you’ve framed your shot, but before you roll, you should quickly check the frame all the way around. After your eye has traveled 360 degrees, you should search within the frame as well. It’s sometimes amazing what you find. Often it’ll be things that should not be there during your shot (electrical cords from your lighting, a shadow of the boom mic. or maybe even a person who you don’t want in the shot). A periphery check is very important.

Photo editing software applications

Internet age has brought a variety of techniques to edit pictures and publish them online. Capture camera special moments and circulate them in the network social has become popular among Internet users. There are different types of tools that are presented to people like shot or film photo editing. These tools allow a user to edit pictures and videos as well as add visual and audio effects.

Editing tools are uniquely designed computer programs that come included with the camera or the computer system. A good tool is that is convenient and easy to operate. It should be a program that can be used by anyone. If you are a beginner in photography or an expert, should be able to manage and use effectively the functions of the tool. These are the basic attributes that someone look for while selecting the best photo editing software. There are some programs that are based on the latest technology. They give you an ability not only to the still-image editing, but also videos. Other types of programs provide a user with a capability to incorporate even the animation videos. A person can also benefit from the transition and Visual effects. It can also give for music video or the time that a film of still images. Majorly, users are concerned with the fact that the program you choose should give good picture quality.The range of prices must be affordable and cost-effective suit to the high quality presupuesto.Con and status - tools-art, a person still can adjust brightness, contrast of color and other Visual effects, or audio.

Reasons for using these tools:

Film makers can use these software as green screen technology to bring Visual effects and audio to your movie.It can be useful for amateur photographers as this enhances their skills of editing and preparation of videos.You can use these tools as audiovisual aids in the aulas.Una person with a hobby you can use these programs to capture moments hermosos.También you can customize your pictures and videos as by its necesidad.Profesionales may require the use of these tools for the preparation of presentations.

Video - editing A Step Ahead with green screen technology

Video editing has never become as easy as always with the technique of green screen. The technique is also called key editing of chroma. It is editing technique that blend two images together to create a unique and finished image. Photographers use this technique extensively in film and television to create a wide range of special effects.

Green screen technology procedure:

"Color" means colour in jargon and video chromakeying work shooting a subject against a background of a very simple and uniform color. A photographer uses blue or screens of green, because they are far from human skin tones that might get. It is also easy to use these two colours, and they are sensitive to the camera image sensors. Item not must wear green or blue color that can be the same as the screen background. Effects of the picture or video editing. The background screen should be uniformly illuminated and even Item foreground. This is to prevent any kind of shadows on the subject or in the background screen.Keep the subject and background in as far as possible.After the shooting, editing software replaces the background color by another shot by the photographer. the most common example is a map behind the presenters of Weatherman noticias.La stations person really is foot in front of a screen of green or blue which replaced in the control room with a background image of a map.

Use of green screen technology:

Editing with key technology of color video is easy to use to transform your videos and images and customize you the way you want. Professionals of mainly implementing this method, and used for photo for newspapers, magazines, advertisements and Internet sessions. Portrait photography, a photographer uses this type of technique.
